Howdy Riders and Racers,
Do you ever feel oversaturated when the green flag flies?
Here are some tools I use to manage my race experience.
1. Mindset - Developing awareness and becoming unshakeable
The mindset we curate for ourselves in life, and on race day could easily be the most important aspect to our success because it applies to every other aspect that we need to get right!
Mindset is a practice. It can be practiced 24/7, 365.
Here is what you can do to curate a strong mindset.
BREATHE - Long, slow nose breaths.
GRATITUDE - Remembering and practicing to be grateful
STILLNESS - Keep yourself out of a reactionary mindset. Stay calm, continue forward. “I am unshakeable”.
MANTRA - Having a mantra that keeps you grounded, focused, and in the proper mindset can help a lot.
Examples: Repeating “Sharp, fast focused” or Fast, flowy, forward” or “Smooth, fast, focused”
2. Prepare
Make sure you come into the race properly hydrated. More info on hydration here.
I like to have a nice dinner the night before the race. Steak, potatoes, vegetables and some fruit. For breakfast, eggs, toast, and fruit are good. Bacon and avocado make it even better.
Educate yourself on the course and the challenges it may present.
Fuel stops, hydration and nutrition should be mixed, bagged and prepared for action.
3. Fundamentals
Rely on your foundation of fundamentals to hit your lines and keep charging forward.
LOOK AHEAD.
It can be tempting to over optimize your race strategy with new things. New gel packs, different tires, new hydration/nutrition strategy, new suspension settings, grips, levers, gearing, boots, pants, gear, etc…Remember, new things need to be tested to see if they work for us. Race day is not the day to try new things.
4. Dealing with Setbacks:
It’s a race, and like other life challenges setbacks are to be expected. It is how we manage these setbacks that dictates our character, and our performance.
Take a deep breath and Keep Charging.
Bring it Home
Racing motorcycles is a fun experience and we owe it to ourselves to do the best we can. Whether you are world champion or a first timer, having fun will improve our performance and make it a better experience.
I hope these tips help. Have fun!
